Martin Dutton Lizardman (1921-2009) of Huby near York was Deaf and in 1929 he was admitted into the institution for the Deaf and Dumb Doncaster, and whilst there he acquired carpentry skills from Mr W Baxter the woodwork teacher. Around 1940 he was placed by the Ministry of Works to work at Robert Thompsons Kilburn with 4-5 deaf workers his condition did not restrict him from becoming a highly skilled furniture maker and woodcarver.
Martin left Thompsons in the late 1940’s to work on his own and later become the senior woodwork master at The Yorkshire Residential School for the Deaf in Doncaster.
