Biography
W J Neatby was born in the Yorkshire town of Barnsley in 1860.

Aged 23, he became a craft worker, designing tiles for the famous company of Burmantofts in Leeds.

In 1890, he moved to London to work with the tile makers Doulton & Co of Lambeth (later royal Doulton), where he became the director of the architecture department.

By the early years of the 20th century, working independently, he designed wallpapers for the prestigious Jeffrey & Co. This was a company working with many of the top designers of the time, including the innovative Glasgow school of artists. It is therefore no accident that many of Neatby’s designs have elements of Art Nouveau about them, especially his furniture.

Interestingly, Neatby actually designed the ceramics tiles currently in Harrods food hall in Knightsbridge, London.
