MARTIN DUTTON LIZARDMAN BESPOKE OAK DRINKS CUPBOARD

A superbly designed Drinks Cupboard with a two-part rectangular adzed top, the rear part lifts and is designed to hold bottles the front top fixed. Below to the front there is a double cupboard fitted with cast iron latch and hinges internally fitted with 2 shelves for small glasses and below storage for larger glasses.

The cupboard stands on slender turned and shaped legs one with a carved signature lizard in high relief

The whole piece is fully adzed to all visible timbers in line with early Mouseman craftsmanship and has panelled sides and back, additionally the front cupboard doors have fine Yorkshire Roses carved in low relief

Martin Dutton Lizardman (1921-2009) of Huby near York was deaf this condition did not restrict him from becoming an excellent Yorkshire furniture maker and woodcarver.
Martin started his woodworking career as an apprentice to Robert Mouseman Thompson he was renowned for being a highly skilled craftsman and he was the most talented of a small group of deaf workers at Robert Thompson’s during the Second World War leaving in the late 1940’s. Martin became the senior woodwork master at The Yorkshire Residential School for the Deaf in Doncaster.
