Ullathorne’s Mill on the north bank of the Tees was a favourite place for Pittuck to paint. He even painted the demolition of the building in 1974. This bird’s eye view, level with the top of the chimney describes the Mill and surrounding buildings as a dark tangled industrial mass. Smoke no longer pours from the proud structure that bisects the frame. Instead, the softer edges of nature’s green pastures encroach with brightness on the horizon as Barnard Castle’s relationship with its mills enters a new era.
